Taiko is Japanese for “drum.” The word has come to refer to both the art form of Japanese drumming as well as the drums themselves. Taiko drums have been used in temple ceremonies, in battle, and as instruments for the Japanese Imperial court. Wood, bamboo, cowhide, and metal – these materials, used in the construction of traditional Japanese instruments, affirm the connection of the player to the natural world.
Taiko in Japan today is a unique blend of tradition, spanning thousands of years of history, and modern creative expression combining elements of jazz, martial arts, dance, and spirituality.
WE ARE A CONTEMPORARY TAIKO ENSEMBLE.
We’re a group of taiko players who love exploring this incredible, complex genre. The history of taiko, from its traditional roots to its modern influences, all plays a part in our compositions and performances.
Our members are all experienced taiko players and classically trained musicians, specializing in strings, winds, percussion, vocals, and composition. We combine all of these elements to create pieces that showcase the intensity, passion and musicality of Japanese drumming.
The Japanese character “Shin” in ShinDaiko means “advancing” or “moving forward.” We seek to always be moving forward in our musical vision, to explore new ideas and concepts, and to weave the powerful sounds of taiko with other musical influences to create our own distinct melody.
We are based in the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area, with a secondary location of Rockland, Maine. We’re available and excited to perform throughout the entire New England area.
