Ger Tysk is a Japanese bamboo flute player and taiko drummer performing, recording, and teaching bamboo flute throughout Maine and New England. She has performed and recorded solo as well as with traditional Japanese drumming ensembles, classical instruments, and rock and pop musicians. SHINOBUE : THE JAPANESE TRANSVERSE BAMBOO FLUTE
I grew up studying and performing on the classical Western silver flute. In 2012, while studying Japanese taiko drumming, I discovered the shinobue, shaped and played very similarly to the Western flute. The shinobue is a beautiful, versatile woodwind instrument, cleverly disguised as a simple tube of bamboo.
What I love most about the shinobue is its natural timbre and warmth. Due to its construction -a single laquered tube of bamboo- the sound it produces is airier and more organic than its silver Western cousin. At the same time, the shinobue offers the same graceful range of expression and technique as the Western flute, although it’s missing all those extra keys. As each shinobue is constructed from a different stalk of bamboo, no two shinobue sound exactly alike.
I’m based in lovely mid-coastal Maine (Rockland, Camden, and Belfast area) and am available to perform and teach throughout all of New England.
