A yokai (Japanese spirit) possessing tattered rags and nets, the Shiro Uneri resembles a small, ghostly dragon. It haunts the places where its old rag body once lay disused, causing mischief throughout the household. Matthew Meyer of yokai.net says, “Born out of a dish towel or kitchen rag which has seen too many years of use past its prime, the shiro uneri looks like a ferocious, yet tiny cloth dragon.”
Shiro Uneri is considered to be the literary invention of Toriyama Sekien, a feudal era scholar, writer, and artist known for his fanciful depictions of Japanese folklore. Our version of Shiro Uneri makes use of a swing beat and strong rhythms to capture the essence of the dragon’s movements.
